I often get asked from folks on how to make a small room look large. Here’s some of my favourite tips to make my small home appear larger.

Reflective Surfaces

Using reflective surfaces like mirrors to bounce light around and make your home seem brighter than it actually is. If you don’t have much space on your walls, a glass or mirrored side table or reflective accessories like this fun, disco ball planter can do the trick

Low Profile Furniture

Furniture that is low to the ground helps the space seem larger simply because there’s more space above the furniture. This works especially well when you have short ceilings.

Furniture with Exposed Legs

Speaking of furniture, I also always look for pieces with exposed legs. This tricks the eye into thinking there’s more space. Since you see more floor space, it creates an additional sense of openness.

Hang Curtains High and Wide

I like to hang curtains high and wide, especially in those extra dark rooms, like guest room/office.

This makes the windows appear larger and doesn’t block any of the natural light.

Large Scale Artwork

Lastly, never be afraid to use large scale artwork. A gallery wall in a small space may actually make the room feel cluttered, but a large-scale piece can add drama.

What tricks do you use to make a small home or room appear larger?
